Tribute to the late Lord Rodger of Earlsferry (died 26 June 2011)

The Society learned with sadness of the death of Lord Rodger.

He was one of the two Scottish members of The UK Supreme Court, a former Lord President and Lord Advocate in Scotland .

He was a major supporter of the Society when it launched actively in Scotland with its annual colloquium in 1994. As Lord Advocate he hosted a reception at Edinburgh Castle , which was greatly appreciated by our French members and by the Premier Président de la Cour de Cassation, Pierre Drai. The reception was a “triple first” as Lord Rodger’s invitation was the first official invitation to “Monsieur le Premier Président” and the first visit to the United Kingdom of the head of the French Judiciary as well as the opening event of our inaugural colloquium in Scotland .

Lord Rodger always gave his support to the Society. He attended the annual colloquium in Lille and many events including a comparative law session at King’s College London at which he took the chair.

All those in the Society who knew him and were recipients of his advice, shared knowledge and great kindness very much regret his passing.
